‘Layers’, an exhibition by Margaretha Schöning
at the Wishbone Gallery. This small cultural space,
in Orrell Arts Centre, can be found by the distinct
sculpture of a roosters head on the outside of the building.
Schöning, a German born artist based in Liverpool
(England), has produced a collection of mixed media
pieces from 2006 to 2007. They are abstract compositions
of objects encased in layers of translucent white wax.
Red ink sandwiched between the sheet of glass and the
wax introduces a further layer.
On some images, the red ink on still retains the fluidity
and others sets forming organic abstractions. Each piece
is formed by grades of media, interconnected by the
two dimensional plane. In one, there is a hand written
letter with some of the text readable, as if submerged
and encapsulated in time, preserved by the wax.
The work poses a curiosity through the abstractions
of objects and composition. Each piece draws the viewer
to analyse the layers and interpret the objects immersed. |
Schöning is an established artist in her independent
practice and co-founded basement with Susan Leask in Liverpool,
England. She is one of the principle members of the Eight
Days a Week Cultural Exchange and recently completed an
Artist in Residence Programme in Peru, South America.
‘Layers’ by Schöning runs from 14 May 2007
to 28 June 2007 at the Wishbone Gallery.
